The real version. How I went from zero experience to working as a prop maker around the world. What worked, what didn’t, what I misunderstood, and what I wish someone had told me earlier.

About the Guide

This guide is here to give you a clear understanding of what it’s actually like to work as a prop maker, and what is expected of you in this industry. It’s designed to give you the best possible tools to make a confident decision about whether, and how , to pursue this as a career. I get asked the same questions over and over again: How do you become a prop maker? What did you study - and what did you actually do? What should I include in my portfolio? How do you find the jobs? Can you tell me your story? Instead of answering these one by one, I wanted to put everything into one honest, practical guide. This is not a course teaching you specific techniques. It’s a guide to help you understand the industry, make your own decisions, and figure out your next steps.

About your guide

I'm Nadja. A film industry prop maker originally from Finland. I'm here to guide and inspire you towards expressing your creativity and succeeding in your projects. Because I'm a firm believer that: If you feel like you want to do something, it's because you're meant to be doing it.  Whether it's something as simple as doing your first creative project, or becoming a film industry prop maker. I practice what I preach. I used to work in the restaurant industry as a restaurant manager in my early twenties. After visiting Wētā Cave during my holidays in New Zealand, I woke up to my true calling - to become a film industry prop maker and build fantasy worlds for a living. There was only one problem - I had never done anything creative before. I turned my whole life around and went to study model making in Ikaalinen College of Crafts and Design, and started sending my portfolio around everywhere. I have since then worked in many different countries and workshops – New Zealand and Wētā Workshop being the latest one. I have specialised in sculpting, mold making, casting, prop making and building large-scale sculptures. This all has given me a wide understanding of the different areas of prop making and how it's done in different countries, with different materials. I believe expressing our creativity and chasing our passions is essential – and not only on a personal level. By following your passion and living to your truest potential, you will also activate and inspire others to do the same. I'm so excited to have you here.
